The European Union revealed plans to finance forty-six modern initiatives concerning the extraction, processing, and recycling of vital minerals, aiming to reduce reliance on Beijing and secure necessary commodities for industrial sectors across the continent. Stephane Sejourne, the European Commission Vice-President responsible for industry, stated on Friday that diversifying supply chains through local initiatives has become urgent to protect factories, particularly following Chinese restrictions on exporting key manufacturing components. The anticipated operations are distributed across sixteen European countries, including France which hosts six operations, with eight focusing on mining, eleven on processing, nineteen on recycling, and the remaining operations combining multiple operational processes. The initiatives target lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and magnesium ores, in addition to rare earth elements associated with permanent magnets used in automotive, clean energy, modern technology, and security sectors. These developments respond to continental anxiety over guaranteeing supplies, given Beijing's dominance in processing these elements and restricting exports the previous year, notably before reaching a settlement with the United States. The official confirmed that public authorities allocated two billion euros to support these steps, joining forty-seven previously selected operations within the bloc, plus thirteen operations outside it. He pointed out that twenty-five operations in the first batch passed environmental impact assessments, and seventeen obtained construction permits, as a result of efforts aimed at accelerating field implementation.
