Al-Zaydi Carries to Washington a Message of Confidence Affirming Iraq's Sovereignty and Pursuit of Development
Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaydi affirmed that his upcoming visit to Washington carries a message of confidence, stating that Iraq is a sovereign nation dedicated to achieving comprehensive development. This was conveyed in an article published by the Prime Minister in "The Washington Post," where he clarified that Iraq is going through a pivotal moment in its national reform journey, a long-awaited period by all segments of society. He noted that the path has been arduous since the transformation witnessed in 2003 and the end of the dictatorship, as Iraqis have strived to rebuild state institutions, combat terrorism, and strengthen national unity. Al-Zaydi added that since taking office, his priority has been to build a state that all Iraqis can be proud of. He emphasized that his government is committed to ensuring the state's legitimate monopoly on the use of force. He pointed out that in less than sixty days, the government has made tangible progress in disarming a significant number of armed factions and opened the door for their integration into official state institutions. It has also worked to consolidate the rule of law and provide essential opportunities and services to citizens. Al-Zaydi continued, referring to his firm pledge to the Iraqi people that September 30 would mark the end of the international coalition's mission and the beginning of a new phase of ambitious partnership with the United States. He explained that he would head to Washington this week with the aim of genuinely deepening this partnership. He expressed his desire to shift the relationship between the two countries from crisis management to creating opportunities, especially those with tangible economic impact. He affirmed that during his meeting with President Donald Trump, he would present practical ways to achieve this vision. The Prime Minister further stated that the American President prioritizes results, and he adopts the same approach. He indicated that discussions would focus on investment, expressing their desire for major American companies to consider the available opportunities in developing Iraq's infrastructure, energy sector, industry, technology, and digital economy. Al-Zaydi stressed that Iraq would play its role in implementing necessary reforms. Citing his experience in the business sector, he clarified that the trust of the international community, stability, clear vision, and an attractive investment environment are all essential factors for transforming ambitions into tangible economic progress. In the same context, he emphasized that regional stability is vital for his country's development. Iraq possesses the ingredients that qualify it to become a leading economic hub in the region, thanks to having one of the world's largest proven oil reserves, along with abundant natural resources, a competent workforce, and a large domestic market. He considered the United States an indispensable partner in promoting international peace and expanding trust and cooperation between Iraq and its neighbors. He asserted that conflicts and wars only expand suffering and reduce the development opportunities upon which prosperity is built. He noted that Iraq can also be an effective partner in achieving regional stability. He indicated that he would discuss ways to develop the Strategic Framework Agreement and expand cooperation in education, training, and technology transfer, as well as continue developing Iraqi security capabilities to protect the achievements made by the people. The Prime Minister affirmed that Iraqis realize the time has come to write a new chapter in Iraq's relationship with the world and its strategic partners, based on integration into global economic and financial systems. He stressed that he carries a message of confidence to the United States stating that Iraq, as a sovereign state, stands at an equal distance from regional alignments and conflicts, choosing instead the path of development, extending its hand to its friends. Al-Zaydi concluded by saying that great nations are not made by chance but are built by conscious will that seizes the right historical moment when hope is combined with wisdom and leadership chooses to build bridges towards the future. He affirmed that this is the choice made by Iraqis and that he looks forward to achieving this future with American friends.
