Study Warns: Smartphone Screenshots May Induce "Digital Amnesia"

Recent scientific research has revealed that using smartphones to capture screenshots may reduce individuals' ability to recall content viewed later, without providing any mental gains to compensate for this noticeable memory decline. A series of experiments conducted in this regard demonstrated that the mere act of saving content via "screenshot" significantly decreases attention to the experience itself as it happens, thereby weakening its effective embedding and consolidation into memory. This conclusion stems from detailed findings published in the journal Memory & Cognition, with details reported by the specialized Psypost website. Psychologists have long deeply studied the various effects modern digital devices have on human memory storage mechanisms. In a related context, a previous 2014 study concluded that photographing exhibits inside museums makes people less efficient at remembering their details compared to merely viewing them. This scientific phenomenon has become known as the "photo-induced memory impairment effect." Commenting on these findings, cognitive psychologist Sophia Fabrizio, along with Professor of Psychology, Cognitive and Brain Sciences Diane Westerman from Binghamton University, described the matter as a striking and thought-provoking paradox. They pointed out that individuals typically capture photos of events they wish to preserve and remember, whereas evidence indicates that the act of photographing itself can hinder this desired goal. Research expanded in 2025 to include contemporary digital behavior, revealing that capturing screenshots not only harms memory related to visual arts but can also have a worse effect than traditional photography. Researchers had initially hypothesized that screenshots might be less harmful than traditional photography, given they don't require precise camera aiming, frame adjustment, or diverting attention from the primary scene. However, results completely contradicted initial expectations, as the negative impact on memory was found to be significantly deeper when using "screenshot" compared to regular photographic capture. The research also drew upon "cognitive offloading," a scientific concept referring to human reliance on digital devices as external memory repositories. A previous 2019 study indicated that storing information in digital files can help alleviate the brain's burden, allowing mental resources to be directed to other tasks. This fundamental idea is based on the premise that knowing information is stored elsewhere reduces the brain's biological need to actively retain it. From this perspective, researchers sought to test whether screenshots represent an automatic form of "cognitive offloading," where the brain feels content is safely stored and thus stops exerting effort to remember it. If true, a memory decline might be accompanied by improved mental performance in other tasks, due to freeing up cognitive resources. To verify this, the team conducted seven separate experiments involving university students. However, results did not reveal any additional tangible cognitive benefits to compensate for the memory loss. Researchers also concluded that this negative effect occurs automatically and unconsciously, even among daily screenshot users. In light of these findings, researchers believe thousands of screenshots stored on smartphones often remain unreviewed, making them easily susceptible to oblivion by the human's natural memory system. Based on these conclusions, researchers recommend that if a particular piece of information or experience is truly important and an individual wishes to firmly embed it in memory, it is best to put their phone aside and focus full attention on the event itself. They added that digital tools remain useful for reminding us of daily appointments and tasks, but for forming lasting memories, it may be more appropriate not to rely entirely and constantly on photographing and documenting everything.
