National Security Agency Dismantles Major Crude Oil Theft and Smuggling Network Operating in Muthanna

The National Security Agency announced today, Friday, the dismantling of a criminal network specialized in the theft and smuggling of crude oil, operating through a strategic oil pipeline in Muthanna province. The agency reported discovering two breaches in the pipeline, alongside hidden pipes buried underground extending approximately 270 meters. The operation commenced with precise intelligence information from the Basra and Muthanna security directorates, indicating suspicious activities related to crude oil theft. This information was verified and corroborated through intelligence gathering and field operations, with monitoring efforts initiated from the capital Baghdad and extending to Muthanna province. Tactical team detachments successfully identified the location where smuggling operations were being carried out and the individuals involved. Following the completion of evidence collection and obtaining judicial approvals, the site was raided, leading to the arrest of four suspects and the seizure of vehicles used for oil transport. The agency clarified that a farm had been used as a hub for smuggling operations, situated near the route of a strategic oil pipeline that runs from southern Iraq towards Haditha, connected to the oil transfer system leading to the northern parts of the country. The inspection process revealed the presence of two breaches in the main pipeline and the installation of hidden pipes buried underground for approximately 270 meters, leading into the farm. It was also found that trucks designated for cement transport had been modified to carry crude oil in an attempt at deception. Initial investigations indicated that the revenues from these theft and smuggling operations amounted to approximately 500 million Iraqi Dinars monthly. Furthermore, technical examination, based on corrosion marks at the breach sites, suggested that these breaches had existed for a prolonged period. The agency affirmed that in coordination with the relevant oil authorities, both breaches were addressed, sealed, and the pipeline secured. The statements and confessions of the accused were recorded, and they have been referred to the competent legal authorities for necessary action.
