Iraq and Portugal Explore Reopening Portuguese Embassy in Baghdad, Boosting Bilateral Partnership
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Portuguese counterpart, Paulo Rangel, recently discussed the possibility of reopening the Portuguese Embassy in the capital, Baghdad, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and expand prospects for joint cooperation. The discussion took place during a phone call received by Minister Hussein from his Portuguese counterpart, during which Rangel extended his congratulations to the Iraqi Minister on the renewed confidence and his re-assumption of the Foreign Ministry duties, wishing him success in his tasks. The two sides discussed ways to develop bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the Portuguese Republic, emphasizing the importance of reopening the Portuguese Embassy in Baghdad as a key step to enhance joint cooperation in various fields. The talks also covered relations between Iraq and the European Union, and ways to continue strengthening and developing them, with an emphasis on Portugal's support for Iraqi efforts in this regard. The ministers also explored prospects for cooperation and coordination on the international arena, in addition to discussing current regional developments, particularly the situation in the region and the impact of military operations in the Strait of Hormuz on regional security, stability, and the global economy. At the conclusion of the call, the Portuguese Foreign Minister extended an official invitation to Fuad Hussein to visit Portugal next month, with the aim of continuing consultations and solidifying bilateral relations. For his part, Minister Hussein expressed his thanks and appreciation for the kind invitation, welcoming it and confirming his intention to accept it in a manner that serves the common interests of both countries.
