The Ministry of Electricity revealed that Iraq currently imports 600 megawatts daily through the interconnection line with Turkey, alongside plans to increase these supplies to 2,000 megawatts, noting that the Jordan contract expired in mid-September. Ministry spokesman Ahmed Turki Jiyad stated that technical work on Iraq’s segment of the Gulf electrical interconnection reached a 98% completion rate with a 500-megawatt capacity, explaining that finalizing the project awaits the Kuwaiti side, which paused work due to regional developments. Jiyad added that the ministry aims to renew the electricity import agreement with Jordan by next summer, confirming discussions with Saudi Arabia regarding an interconnection project to transmit roughly 2,000 megawatts within a 24-month execution timeframe following official signing. He stressed that cross-border electrical links reinforce domestic production alongside building new national power plants and do not serve as an alternative to local generation.
