Apple has unveiled a new version of its MacBook Pro laptop, featuring a touchscreen for the first time in the Mac lineup, marking a shift in the company's approach after years of excluding this feature. The new device combines a touchscreen with OLED technology, delivering more vibrant colors and improved contrast, along with a lighter weight compared to previous models, and reintroduces the illuminated Apple logo on the back. Key updates in this release include: - An OLED screen offering vivid colors, deeper blacks, and enhanced contrast, debuting for the first time in MacBook computers. - The device weighs approximately 1.36 kilograms, down from 1.59 kilograms in the previous version. - The "Dynamic Island" feature replaces the traditional notch at the top of the screen, providing additional interactive information. - The Apple logo is illuminated again on the back of the laptop. The addition of the touchscreen required adjustments to the macOS operating system to facilitate content interaction, along with reinforced screen hinges to reduce wobbling when touched. The touchscreen enables daily tasks such as moving windows, scrolling, and organizing content, as well as other uses including: - Drawing directly on the screen. - Playing virtual musical instruments. - Testing applications in an environment simulating iPhone and iPad usage. This change comes after years of excluding touchscreens on laptops due to concerns about user comfort and the need to reach over the keyboard to access the screen, but the company reconsidered, believing the new device will not negatively impact iPad sales. This move is part of a broader strategy to develop new device categories, including a foldable phone and a smart home display. Johnny Srouji, Apple's head of hardware, stated the new device is "unmatched," highlighting the integration of Apple Silicon chips with hardware and software. Prices for the new MacBook Pro start at $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch model, while the non-touchscreen version starts at $1,999. Pre-orders have begun, with availability set for Friday, November 6. This announcement comes during a week that also saw the launch of a new iPad Mini, updates to iMacs, and other MacBook Pro models with lower specifications, alongside the October launch of a smart home display and a new iPhone model.
