United States Utilizes Grok AI in Military Operations Against Iran
The U.S. government has revealed its use of the "Grok" artificial intelligence program, developed by Elon Musk's X platform, to conduct military strikes against Iran during operations in the Middle East. This disclosure came in a legal memo, reviewed by a news agency, dated June 15, which defends the gas turbines used at a large data center belonging to Musk's xAI company, currently facing an environmental lawsuit. According to the memo, the Department of Justice argued that the lawsuit "threatens U.S. national, economic, and energy security by seeking to cut off energy supply to AI innovation supporting the Department of Defense's military operations." To support this argument, federal prosecutors presented testimony from Cameron Stanley, the Pentagon's AI official, who stated that "Grok" is being utilized as part of "Project Maven." Project Maven is an AI-enhanced U.S. military targeting program that initially relied on the "Claude" model produced by Anthropic. Stanley's testimony indicated that "Maven Smart Systems" enabled U.S. forces to launch over 2,000 munitions at 2,000 different targets within 96 hours during "Operation Epic Fury," the name Washington gave to the conflict it initiated with Israel on February 28. Stanley also lauded the "greatly enhanced operational efficiency" provided by the government's Grok model. It is worth noting that a civil rights advocacy group had filed a lawsuit against xAI, accusing it of operating dozens of turbines without a license and violating the Clean Air Act. The U.S. government had terminated its contracts with Anthropic in February after the latter refused to allow its tools to be used for fully automated strikes or mass surveillance of Americans. Subsequently, the U.S. Department of Defense turned to the company's competitors, including Google, OpenAI, and xAI.
