UN Warning: Toxic Wildfire Smoke Causes 100,000 Additional Deaths Annually

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a United Nations agency, announced that toxic smoke from wildfires contributed to an additional 100,000 deaths annually between 2010 and 2018. According to the organization, the number of wildfires has tripled over the past three decades. A report issued by the WMO revealed that "the number of severe fire smoke events worldwide has tripled since the 1990s, leading, according to estimates, to approximately 100,000 additional deaths annually between 2010 and 2018 – though the actual figure is very likely to be an underestimate." The organization's studies indicated that pollution from wildfires, coupled with recurrent extreme heatwaves, could undermine global efforts to improve air quality. The WMO's report highlighted that wildfires have become an increasingly significant source of atmospheric pollution. This comes at a time when many developed countries have succeeded in reducing harmful emissions from industry and transport, thanks to implemented environmental and climate regulatory measures. The report also sheds light on the escalating impact of particulate matter and ground-level ozone, two pollutants known to be associated with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The report stated that the levels of these particulates in 2025 exceeded usual rates in northern Canada, parts of Russia, and western and central Africa, as a result of a significant increase in the number of fires. Additionally, northwestern Spain became a hotspot for severe pollution following a violent and unprecedented wave of fires that swept through the region in late summer 2025. The United Nations called for stricter control over pollutants such as black carbon (soot) and microplastics. The report's authors believe that oversight of these substances remains insufficient, despite their widespread presence in the air around us.
