Trump Renews Criticism of NATO: Spending Without Benefit on Alliance Protection
Former US President Donald Trump has renewed his criticisms of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Trump stated on his "Truth Social" platform on Thursday that the United States spends enormous sums on protecting NATO, significantly more than any other nation, asserting that it gains no benefit from this expenditure. Trump provided detailed figures, indicating that America allocated $999 billion, compared to $90.5 billion for the United Kingdom, $66.5 billion for France, $48.8 billion for Italy, and $44.3 billion for Poland. He noted that other countries, including Germany, spend considerably less, describing this situation as "unbelievable." These remarks are part of a series of repeated criticisms Trump has directed at the defensive alliance since assuming his second presidential term. He has repeatedly called for increased spending on defense requirements and has even threatened to withdraw from NATO on multiple occasions. He had also previously hinted at the possibility of not providing military assistance to any NATO member state requesting aid. The intensity of these criticisms escalated particularly with the outbreak of the American-Israeli war against Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. At that time, Trump called on alliance nations to contribute to securing this vital and strategic maritime passage, but the refusal of most European countries to participate exacerbated his displeasure with them and the Atlantic Alliance.
