Prime Minister Directs Timeline for Tigris and Euphrates Pollution Cleanup

Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi has directed a timeline for addressing the pollution of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The directive emerged during a special meeting on the crisis, attended by parliamentary committee heads and representatives from concerned ministries and governorates. Abdul Wahed, in her address, stated that "river water pollution is significant," explaining the Prime Minister's instruction to define a clear period for remediation. She added, "Meetings on pollution have continued for over a year; causes are known, so solutions are needed today instead of continued discussions." The Judicial Council supports the Environment Ministry in holding polluting sectors accountable. The Ministry affirmed its resolve to take all legal and punitive measures against responsible entities, as it is publicly accountable. Al-Zaidi also directed that environmental compliance be part of directors-general evaluations, a crucial step for improving Iraq's environmental reality. The meeting aims to establish a comprehensive national plan for a better environment.
