New Judge Assigned to Oversee Venezuelan President and Wife's Case in New York
A court in the Southern District of New York has appointed Judge Analisa Torres to preside over the lawsuit filed against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in the United States. The previous federal judge, Alvin Hellerstein, who was handling the case, passed away at the age of 92. The court confirmed that the case has been reassigned to Judge Analisa Torres in the local U.S. court. Notably, Judge Torres previously oversaw a case involving two federal prison employees in New York City, connected to the death of financier Jeffrey Epstein in August 2019. The employees faced charges of falsifying inmate screening records on the night of Epstein's death. In 2021, Judge Torres approved agreements to defer prosecution of the accused individuals in that matter.
