Laporta Explains Difficulty of Messi's Return to Barcelona, Reveals Tribute Plan

Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, has announced the club's intention to honor Argentine legend Lionel Messi at the Spotify Camp Nou stadium after its renovation. However, he simultaneously ruled out the return of the world champion to the team as a player. Speaking at the club's General Assembly, Laporta stated they communicated their wish to hold a tribute for Messi upon stadium completion, expressing enthusiasm for the event. He confirmed the ceremony would host up to 105,000 spectators, pending Messi's agreement. He added: "I hope to see him soon, and the tribute can be held with approximately 105,000 spectators present." Regarding Messi potentially playing for Barcelona again, Laporta underscored the challenge, attributing it to the Argentine's inherent desire for continuous participation and strong competition. He noted: "Messi was the best player in the world, and he is one of the best players in history, but everything changes in life. We are enthusiastic about having players like Lamine Yamal, a candidate for individual and collective titles." Laporta added: "It's difficult for Messi to come and play just 15 minutes. Leo always wants to play and win, even in training. Given our highly competitive squad, I foresee his return as difficult." Laporta also touched on the period before Messi's departure, mentioning a possibility for him to stay an extra season, but Messi made a different choice. Messi concluded his Barcelona career in the summer of 2021 after over two decades, subsequently joining Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Inter Miami in 2023.
