Iranian and French Foreign Ministers Discuss Hormuz Developments and Diplomatic Incident

The Iranian and French foreign ministers held a telephone conversation on Tuesday to discuss developments in the Strait of Hormuz and other regional and international issues. During the call, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed with his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, the latest bilateral, regional, and international developments. Araghchi asserted that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is a direct consequence of Washington's violations of its commitments, stating that the party which reneged on agreements and jeopardized regional stability is responsible for the current situation. Regarding the issue of French diplomats detained in Tehran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry clarified that Araghchi protested against actions by two French diplomats in Tehran that violated diplomatic norms. He affirmed to his French counterpart that adherence to the laws of the host country is a fundamental condition for the continued operation of diplomatic missions. Conversely, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs had summoned the Iranian Chargé d'affaires on Tuesday, two days after announcing that its embassy staff were detained and subjected to physical intimidation by Iranian security services in Tehran. Paris expects Iranian authorities to reveal the circumstances of this incident, punish those responsible, and ensure the security of its premises and staff, in line with its international obligations.
