Elements of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) were present at the Washington home of the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on Monday, less than 48 hours after his death was announced following an aortic rupture. Video footage, captured by Nexstar network and reported by The Hill newspaper, showed at least six men and two women wearing FBI attire present at Graham's home in Washington D.C.'s Capitol Hill neighborhood, alongside members of the U.S. Marshals Service. Several investigators were seen entering and exiting the residence, while one agent was observed retrieving a paper file from a large black container placed outside the home. Graham had passed away on Saturday evening, following what his office described as a "sudden and brief illness." On Sunday, the chief medical examiner issued an initial report stating that the 71-year-old Senator died as a result of an aortic rupture, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. In a statement on Sunday, FBI Director Kash Patel announced that his office was "providing assistance to local authorities and has made all necessary resources available" following Graham's death. The FBI later declined to comment further on Patel's statement. For his part, Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated on Sunday that his unit was leading the investigation into Graham's death, with the FBI providing the required support and resources. In a joint statement with Carroll, the office of Dr. Francisco Diaz, Washington's chief medical examiner, indicated that completing comprehensive toxicological and microscopic examinations of Senator Graham "will take time." These tests aim to determine if any substances were present in the late Senator's body at the time of his death. In a related context, U.S. President Donald Trump ruled out any foul play behind the death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, amidst the spread of conspiracy theories on social media linking his death to Russia. During an interview with Newsmax, when asked if all circumstances surrounding Graham's death had become clear, Trump replied: “I think we know what happened.” Trump explained that Washington's chief medical examiner concluded the cause of death was an aortic rupture, noting that Graham's father also died from a heart attack at the age of 69. Trump commented, "To address the conspiracy theories, I wish it were different, but I believe he had some deep and hard-to-detect health issues, and his father also died at roughly the same age.” He added, “I believe in what I call the racehorse theory; if you have health problems, they are already there. And Graham indeed had some underlying health issues that were not easy to detect.” It is worth noting that Graham was one of the most prominent critics of Russia and President Vladimir Putin, and he had visited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv shortly before his death in Washington. This led some observers to circulate speculations about the circumstances of his passing, however, U.S. authorities confirmed that the death was due to natural causes. In a related development, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, on Monday, appointed Graham's sister as his temporary successor in the Senate, hours after a post by U.S. President Donald Trump urged him to choose her. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Darlene Graham Nordon will assume her brother's Senate seat until the end of the term in January. Graham was known as one of the most hardline politicians on foreign policy matters and was close to Trump. It is worth noting that Graham was unmarried and had no children, and he maintained a very close relationship with his sister, Darlene Graham Nordon.
