Electricity Ministry: Saudi Power Interconnection Project Nears Completion

The Ministry of Electricity announced the imminent completion of its Gulf electricity interconnection lines with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, confirming 218 of 221 project towers are installed. Dr. Ahmed Turki Ghiyad, the Ministry's official spokesperson, stated that the project, anticipated to provide the national grid with up to 2000 megawatts, has achieved substantial progress. Ghiyad explained that 218 towers are installed, with three remaining to cross the Shatt al-Arab. He underscored the project's long-term significance for enhancing the national grid's efficiency post-completion. He added the Ministry is coordinating with the World Bank to prioritize the Gulf electricity interconnection, with its project file expected for discussion shortly. Current power imports from Turkey and Jordan, alongside investment stations in the Kurdistan Region feeding the national grid, total approximately 2650 megawatts. The General Company for Electric Power Transmission for the Southern Region directly oversees the final linking of power towers with Saudi Arabia, in coordination with the GCC Interconnection Authority.
