The US military has disabled ad tracking tools across its mobile phones and computers. This action stems from concerns that commercially available location data could be exploited to target US forces in the Middle East, military officials reported. The US Air Force informed Senator Ron Wyden of deactivating ad identifiers on its devices two months prior. Similarly, the Special Operations Command recently took comparable action on its Windows-powered devices. Wyden has persistently pressed the Department of Defense for months regarding the risks associated with commercial location data for tracking US military personnel.
