The United States has lifted restrictions imposed on the export of Anthropic's latest artificial intelligence models, over two weeks after their implementation. The company announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce cancelled export restrictions on its AI models "Mythos 5" and "Fable 5," confirming it would restore access to both models starting this Wednesday. The U.S. government had previously ordered Anthropic to suspend the availability of its AI models to foreign nationals, including company employees, prompting it to completely block access to both models in compliance with the decision. The "Mythos" model boasts an advanced ability to detect software vulnerabilities, including those potentially undiscovered for decades. U.S. authorities and selected companies have previously utilized it to help identify and address these vulnerabilities. However, these capabilities sparked initial concerns about the potential for such AI to be exploited as a dangerous cyber weapon if it falls into the wrong hands. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, in a published message announcing the lifting of restrictions, stated that Anthropic agreed, among other commitments, to proactively identify and address security risks within its models.
