Russian officials announced on Sunday the death of one person and injury of three others, including a child, following Ukrainian drone attacks that targeted the Samara region on the Volga River. Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, the regional governor, stated that the attacks caused damage to residential buildings and an industrial facility. Independent Russian news reports, based on circulated footage, indicated that the targeted facility was the Syzran oil refinery, where videos showed large fires erupting inside. The Ukrainian General Staff later confirmed responsibility for the attack, noting explosions and fires at the targeted refinery. The Staff also reported that the attacks struck 10 oil tankers and four ferries in the Azov Sea. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday morning the downing of 349 Ukrainian drones overnight. The Syzran refinery, owned by the state oil company Rosneft, with an annual production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tons of gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, has been a frequent target. Following a previous attack in late May, the refinery was forced to suspend operations, exacerbating fuel shortages in Russia due to continuous Ukrainian assaults on oil refining facilities. Fuel stations have begun rationing sales, and drivers in several areas are compelled to wait in long queues. Kyiv's campaign, ongoing for months, aims to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than four years ago, to compel Moscow to negotiate an end to the war.
