Trump Informs Advisors of Desire for Iran Official Meeting in New York Under Suitable Conditions

U.S. President Donald Trump has conveyed to his advisors a willingness to arrange a meeting with Iranian officials in New York, during the United Nations General Assembly, provided "suitable conditions" are in place. Internally, questions have arisen regarding whether such a dialogue would advance the administration's efforts to resolve the conflict with Iran. Doubts also exist about the level of trust Iranian officials in New York hold with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, the country's ultimate decision-maker. Furthermore, Iran's openness to the meeting itself remains unclear. The smaller Iranian delegation for the General Assembly sessions includes President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. Separately, Rubio stated during an "NBC Today" interview that the United States is amenable to the idea, noting that while nothing is yet finalized, Washington welcomes such a step if it presents opportunities for positive outcomes. Trump previously told Fox News on Sunday that he would "most likely" meet Pezeshkian at the summit. This occurs as the U.S. President considers various options, from "erasing Iran" or "letting it rot economically," to attempting a new agreement to end the seven-month-long conflict. Conversely, Pezeshkian, en route to New York, affirmed his intent to "firmly" defend Iran's stance in the conflict with the U.S. and utilize the opportunity to "convey Iran's suffering."
