South Korea: No Final Decision Yet on Deploying Military Assets in Hormuz

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun affirmed Thursday his country has not yet decided on deploying military assets in the Strait of Hormuz. This came before his Washington trip for talks with US counterpart Marco Rubio. Cho told reporters pre-departure that Seoul's contribution to securing navigation freedom in the Strait remains under review. He denied any final decision to send forces or military equipment to the strategic region. On Friday, Cho and Rubio are slated to discuss bilateral relations, Korean Peninsula issues, and regional/international developments. These talks occur amid increasing US pressure on Seoul to aid protecting navigation in the vital maritime passage. Discussions will also cover implementing South Korea's $350 billion investment commitments in the US, under a prior trade agreement. Security issues related to North Korea will also be addressed. Cho's visit reflects Seoul balancing its US defense alliance with concerns over potential military involvement in Hormuz. This follows Iran's warnings of severe consequences for any South Korean participation.
