Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Sarmat missile system could reach a range of more than 35,000 kilometers. The Russian President emphasized that this is "the most powerful missile system in the world, comparable in power to the Soviet Voevoda system in our arsenal." He added: "The total power of the launched warhead is more than 4 times greater than any existing and powerful Western equivalent." He confirmed that Russia has developed advanced missile systems unparalleled worldwide. Putin noted that after the US withdrawal from the ABM Treaty in 2002, Russia was forced to "ensure its strategic security in the context of the new reality and maintain strategic balance." He stated: "For this specific reason, work began in Russia to create advanced systems that guarantee penetration of defense systems." The Russian Strategic Missile Forces Command announced the successful launch of the latest "Sarmat" missiles.
