Prime Minister Stresses Vital Distinction Between Freedom of Expression and Extortion
Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi affirmed on Saturday the absolute necessity of distinguishing between freedom of opinion and expression on one hand, and attempts at blackmail and discrediting on the other. He emphasized that this distinction is crucial for strengthening the desired role of media in nation-building and societal development. Al-Zaidi's remarks came during his reception of a group of media professionals, opinion makers, and specialists in political and economic affairs, who were congratulating him on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. During the meeting, the Prime Minister listened to the attendees' views and suggestions aimed at elevating media performance and enhancing its pivotal role in conveying facts to the public. He stressed the importance of increasing citizens' awareness of the various challenges facing the country, thereby contributing to strengthening social cohesion. Al-Zaidi underscored the government's commitment to providing full support to national media and journalistic institutions in fulfilling their noble duties and mission. He reiterated that media is a fundamental partner in the process of state-building and a supporter of government efforts in combating corruption, achieving reform, and promoting stability and development. He reaffirmed the imperative of adhering to professional and ethical standards, and strictly separating the constitutional right to freedom of opinion and expression from any practices aimed at blackmail or discrediting.
