Parliamentary Security Committee Stresses Respect for MPs' Constitutional Immunity at Checkpoints

The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee on Monday underscored the imperative of respecting the constitutional immunity of members of parliament when dealing with security checkpoints. This came following a meeting held by the committee to discuss legislative and oversight files. A statement issued by the committee, which met under the chairmanship of MP Dr. Khalid Al-Obaidi and with the attendance of its members, indicated that it discussed draft laws on combating cybercrimes and enhancing Iraqi air defense systems. The committee also reviewed the planned field visits program to monitor the performance of security and military institutions. During its meeting, the committee addressed what it described as "improper practices" faced by several members of parliament from some security agencies, particularly the incident involving MP Khalid Sido Aziz at a security checkpoint. The committee reiterated the importance of adhering to legal frameworks when dealing with MPs. It decided to issue summonses to the commanders of operations and police in Nineveh and Saladin, the director of checkpoint affairs, as well as the officers and personnel at the checkpoints involved, to ascertain the circumstances of the incident and take appropriate legal measures.
