Parliamentary Security Committee: PMF Law Bill Expected to Reach Legislature This Month
The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee confirms the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) law project will reach parliament by month-end. Committee member MP Mahmoud Falih Al-Shammari stated the PMF is a crucial security institution within Iraq’s system, linked to the Commander-in-Chief. He underscored the need for a law to clearly regulate its operations and structure. Al-Shammari noted parliament’s eagerness to legislate the bill immediately upon its government submission, expecting its arrival shortly, possibly by the current month’s end. He also revealed plans to host PMF leaders in parliament to discuss the project details and gather feedback, aiming to refine the law before legislative completion. Al-Shammari stressed the upcoming legislation must organize the PMF's legal and administrative framework, preserving its members' rights and entitlements, aligning with its status as an an official state security apparatus.
