Najaf Council Votes to Establish Kufa Governorate

The Najaf Provincial Council voted during its regular session held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, to approve the proposal for creating a new province named the Holy Kufa Governorate within its current administrative boundaries. An official statement indicated that the voting took place during the meeting based on the initiative submitted by Council Chairman Hussein Al-Aisawi. Additionally, the council approved proposals presented by members Zaid Al-Shamkhi, Mohammed Al-Abbasi, and Farooq Al-Ghazali, which involve upgrading the sub-districts of Al-Abbasiya, Al-Haidariya, Al-Hurriya, and Al-Qadisiya to the status of districts within their respective administrative limits.
