Ministry of Justice: Iraq Wins Major International Arbitration Case, Averting $800 Million Payment

Iraq's Ministry of Justice announced on Monday a significant legal achievement: winning an international arbitration case that spared the Iraqi state from paying substantial financial compensation, estimated at approximately $800 million. The ministry clarified, in a statement, that "this legal victory came in the international arbitration case filed by Orange company against the Republic of Iraq / Media and Communications Commission. The decision resulted in the rejection of all plaintiff company claims, thus saving the Iraqi state from the aforementioned $800 million payment." The ministry added that "this achievement is the fruit of continuous legal efforts by the Legal Department in following up the case, defending Iraq's position before the international arbitration panel, thereby enhancing public funds protection and safeguarding state rights in international legal forums." It further stated that "the arbitration panel's decision also obligated Orange company to pay $10 million to Iraq for legal fees and expenses. This step reflects the strength of Iraq's legal position and the efficiency of efforts made in managing this file, achieving positive results that serve the Iraqi state's interests."
