Masrour Barzani Affirms Peshmerga's Constitutional Status and Key Role in Iraqi Defense

Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, speaking in Erbil, affirmed that Peshmerga forces are a constitutional power and a vital part of Iraq's defense system. This statement was made during the Peshmerga unification ceremony. Barzani highlighted the unification step as the first in a long process, noting the next phase holds greater importance. This stage will focus on building and developing the Peshmerga's comprehensive capabilities, especially human resources, and elevating physical training and military awareness. The aim is to align with international military standards, creating a professional, organized national force capable of safeguarding Kurdistan's security and meeting challenges. He stressed the Peshmerga symbolizes the struggle and combat identity of the Kurdish people, recounting their heroic defense of all societal components, fight against terrorism, and protection of freedom, democracy, and peaceful coexistence values. Regarding federal relations, he clarified the Peshmerga serves as a safety valve for protecting Iraq's peace and stability. He emphasized strengthening security and military coordination between Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi Army. Barzani reaffirmed his government's readiness to support Federal Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Ali Al-Zaidi, in solidifying this partnership. He called on the federal government to guarantee the Peshmerga's constitutional rights and equalize their salaries and financial entitlements with those of the Iraqi Army. He concluded by confirming all military formations are officially integrated into a modern, unified structure under the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, encompassing operations, training, command and control, media, and financial administration.
