Macron and Al-Zaidi Discuss Boosting Security Partnership and Diversifying Energy Routes During Paris Visit

French President Emmanuel Macron will host Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Monday for his first visit to Europe since assuming office last May. Macron and al-Zaidi will discuss strengthening defense cooperation and diversifying oil export routes amid the war in the Middle East, as announced by the Élysée Palace. The French Presidency stated that al-Zaidi's visit to France aims to enhance the partnership between the two countries, noting that Macron and al-Zaidi will hold a working lunch meeting. The meeting will address cooperation in priority sectors including energy, transport, infrastructure, water, and health, with contracts expected to be signed, details of which have not yet been disclosed. The two countries intend to strengthen their cooperation in security and defense, according to the Élysée. The Élysée clarified that, in light of the anticipated transformations in the mission of the international coalition against ISIS, both sides will reaffirm their mutual commitment and shared determination to tirelessly continue the fight against terrorism and prevent ISIS from regaining activity, with full respect for the sovereignty of both nations. The Élysée also indicated that Macron and al-Zaidi will discuss the repercussions of regional instability on trade movement and energy supplies, particularly Iraqi oil exports. Both parties will work to resume these exports to help alleviate pressure on energy markets, support the French economy, and sustainably protect the purchasing power of the French people.
