Luxembourg Launches Probe After Flight Suspension Due to Drone Sightings

The government of Luxembourg announced on Saturday that it has launched an investigation into the temporary suspension of services at Luxembourg Airport overnight. This precautionary measure followed the detection of unidentified and unauthorized drones within the airspace over the Findel area. The incident resulted in the diversion of 19 flights to alternative airports, before operations at the airport resumed around 1:20 AM local time (23:20 GMT on Friday). Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden told reporters on Saturday that the country is facing "a new phenomenon for Luxembourg, namely the presence of potentially larger drones in the country's airspace." Frieden added that this challenge "has been observed over the past few days, leading to the precautionary measure taken last night." To assess the situation, Luxembourg's "Joint Ministerial Evaluation Unit for Drones" convened. The Prime Minister also held a meeting with several ministers and relevant authorities to discuss the recent developments. The government stated that "the information available at this stage does not allow for definitive conclusions." Competent authorities, in close cooperation with their international partners, continue to analyze all collected information and conduct necessary examinations to uncover the circumstances of the incident.
