Jordan: 11 Suffocations Reported After Ammonia Gas Leak at Aqaba Industrial Complex

Eleven individuals suffered suffocation injuries on Monday following an ammonia gas leak at the industrial complex in Aqaba, Jordan. Competent authorities successfully brought the leak under control shortly after its occurrence. Nidal Al-Ouran, Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, stated that the suffocation cases ranged from mild to moderate. Some of the injured received treatment at the industrial complex clinic, while others were transferred to the hospital. Al-Ouran confirmed the presence of civil defense and security agencies at the incident site, emphasizing that technical control over the leak was fully established. The Commissioner explained that the incident took place during maintenance work on an old pump or pressure device. He clarified that a pre-existing accumulation of ammonia gas led to a limited leak during the maintenance operations.
