Iraq's Umm Qasr Ports Witness Significant Upturn in Trade Activity
Iraq's Umm Qasr ports have recently witnessed a significant increase in trade activity, driven by the rising number of incoming vessels and the volume of goods handled. This development coincides with the implementation of strategic projects to expand berths and upgrade handling equipment. An official from the Ministry of Transport revealed in a statement to an official newspaper that Umm Qasr South and North ports currently receive an average of four vessels daily. This reflects active trade, resulting from increased cargo handling and a rising demand for logistics services. He added that the Ministry has prepared a comprehensive action plan to keep pace with this activity and ensure the smooth flow of import and export operations. The plan includes technical and administrative procedures aimed at accelerating cargo unloading and loading, reducing vessel waiting times at berths, enhancing operational efficiency, and lowering the time and logistical costs incurred by shipping and commercial companies. The official clarified that the continuous flow of vessels and the increasing volume of handling at Umm Qasr ports are a clear indicator of economic recovery and enhanced effectiveness of the maritime sector. This consolidates the ports' position as a fundamental pillar supporting the national economy and stimulating trade exchange with regional countries. He also noted that the Ministry has initiated programs to modernize handling equipment by introducing advanced mechanisms and technologies that contribute to increasing the ports' capacity and improving service levels. Furthermore, efforts are underway to develop the capabilities of the working staff and enhance performance efficiency to align with international standards in port management and operation. It was also highlighted that the Ministry has commenced berth expansion works for commercial docks, as part of its strategic plan for infrastructure development. This aims to accommodate the continuous increase in vessel numbers and cargo volumes, while enhancing the competitive capability of port operations regionally. He emphasized that these qualitative steps, pursued across several directions, fall within an ambitious and comprehensive governmental vision to transform Iraqi ports into advanced logistics hubs. These centers effectively contribute to supporting regional and international trade, and simultaneously provide an attractive environment for investment in the maritime transport sector, in addition to boosting economic revenues and supplying the country's treasury with hard currencies. The official affirmed the Ministry's commitment to implementing its developmental projects according to well-studied plans that respond to the requirements of the upcoming phase. He pointed to the ports' significant potential for a pivotal role in linking regional and international markets, with current efforts focused on enhancing operational readiness and expanding capabilities to keep pace with the accelerating growth in global trade.
