Iraqi PM and US Secretary of State Call for Halt to Factional Attacks from Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed the importance of preventing armed factions from launching attacks from Iraqi territory. This came during their meeting yesterday, Monday, Baghdad time, in New York, on the sidelines of al-Zaidi’s participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly meetings. Rubio was accompanied by a notable US delegation. Al-Zaidi emphasized the Iraqi government's efforts to strengthen relations with the United States and elevate the strategic partnership between the two countries. He stressed fostering constructive economic cooperation to expand areas of joint work and enhance mutual interests. He also reiterated the government's commitment to completing sovereign entitlements and proceeding with measures to restrict arms to state control, in accordance with constitutional and legal principles. For his part, Rubio expressed his country's support for Iraq, both government and people, in solidifying and sustaining internal stability and realizing Iraqis' aspirations for economic development and greater openness to the world. He highlighted Washington's backing for the government's steps and decisions aimed at completing state components and consolidating the pillars of stability and economic development. In a related context, the US State Department confirmed that both Rubio and al-Zaidi underscored the importance of preventing armed factions from launching attacks from Iraqi territory.
