Iraqi Oil Tanker Passes Through Strait of Hormuz After Exemption

Data from the London Stock Exchange Group and Kpler showed that an Iraqi oil tanker was seen passing through the Strait of Hormuz near Iran’s coast, a day after Tehran announced Iraq’s exemption from transit restrictions.

Kpler said the vessel “Ocean Thunder” was loaded with about one million barrels of Basra Heavy crude on March 2 and is expected to discharge in Malaysia منتصف April.

Iran had closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of global oil and LNG flows pass, after the outbreak of war following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes in late February.

It later announced allowing ships not linked to the U.S. or Israel to pass.

In recent days, three Omani-operated tankers, a French container ship, and a Japanese gas carrier have also crossed the strait.
