Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture Confirms Local Fish Abundance This Season
Iraq's Ministry of Agriculture announced a significant abundance of local fish in markets this season. It confirmed markets boast plentiful Kattan, Bunni, and Shabout, reflecting successful programs to boost fish wealth, enhance food security, and diversify consumer choices. This abundance, it explained, stems from ongoing efforts to sustain fish resources, via Animal Husbandry Department programs breeding local species in state hatcheries and releasing them into rivers and waterways. This supports national stock and ensures species continuity. Additionally, Animal Husbandry hatcheries recorded over 1,549,700 Iraqi fish produced from 2023-2025, part of ministry plans to increase local output, bolster fish reserves, and strengthen nationwide food security.
