Iraqi government prepares draft project plan to restrict weapons
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed on Wednesday that the Iraqi government has prepared a draft project plan to restrict weapons to the state, scheduled to be introduced in the coming days, while pointing out that the Prime Minister announced that the deadline for completing the plan will be in June of next year. A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Atlantic Council in the US capital, Washington, hosted the Foreign Minister on Wednesday in a dialogue session entitled 'Iraq after September 30', moderated by Victoria Taylor, Director of the Iraq Initiative and Syria Project at the Council. The statement added that the dialogue dealt with the latest political and security developments in Iraq and the region, the prospects of Iraqi-American relations, the future of security cooperation, and efforts to combat the terrorist ISIS organization. It continued that the dialogue discussed Iraq's position towards regional conflicts, the repercussions of the sanctions imposed on Iran on Iraq and its economic relations, as well as the Iraqi government's efforts to restrict weapons to the state and deal with the file of armed factions. In this context, the minister explained that the Iraqi government has prepared a draft project plan to restrict weapons to the state, scheduled to be introduced in the coming days, to include specific timeframes for its implementation, noting that the Prime Minister announced that the final deadline for completing the plan will be in June of next year. It continued that the dialogue also touched on border security and developments in Syria and their implications for Iraqi national security, along with discussing opportunities to enhance economic relations between Iraq and the United States, and encouraging American companies to invest in Iraq, in a way that contributes to expanding the horizons of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
