Iraq and Syria Agree to Form Joint Judicial Committees to Address Al-Hol Camp Detainee Files

Iraqi judicial circles have affirmed broad prospects for judicial and legal cooperation between Iraq and Syria, following a high-level judicial delegation's visit to Damascus. Discussions during the delegation's visit, led by the Head of the Supreme Judicial Council, addressed the issue of detainees originating from Al-Hol camp. During the visit, which came upon an official invitation from the Syrian Minister of Justice, discussions focused on the legal status of Syrian detainees whom Iraq received from Al-Hol prison. Judicial investigations were conducted for these individuals, ensuring all legal guarantees were provided. Both sides agreed to form joint judicial committees to hold continuous meetings with the aim of resolving files related to the trials of these detainees. The meetings also featured an exchange of views on ways to enhance judicial cooperation and develop mechanisms for information and experience exchange between the two countries, in addition to preparing for the signing of joint judicial memoranda of understanding in the future.
