Iranian Forces Announce Downing of US Reconnaissance Drone in South

Iranian forces announced the downing of a US MQ-9 reconnaissance drone in Hormuzgan province, southern Iran. A statement by these forces confirmed an "MQ-9 drone was destroyed in Hormuzgan's skies by the Revolutionary Guard's new advanced defense system, operating within the country's integrated air defense network." This incident follows a recent Washington Post report, which revealed the destruction of approximately 45 US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drones. This accounts for about 25% of the total fleet, which comprised 185 aircraft before the conflict. These losses are attributed to the extensive deployment of Reaper drones in Iranian airspace and near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. As a result, the United States had to repurchase MQ-9 Reaper drones still stored with General Atomics.
