Iran Condemns Trump's Threats of Destruction in Formal UN Letter

Iran formally messaged UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council President, accusing US President Donald Trump of threatening its existence. Tehran stated Trump's destruction remarks contravene international law and the UN Charter. Gholam Hossein Darzi, Iran's Chargé d'Affaires to the UN, clarified in the letter that Trump's UN General Assembly statements, threatening Iran's destruction, were not mere political rhetoric. Darzi deemed them direct threats, violating principles against the use of force and undermining international peace and security. Darzi cited Trump's speech where he vowed to "destroy Iran quickly," seeing these comments as an ongoing pattern of public threats from a permanent UN Security Council member's leader. The Iranian official noted the US President had previously, in March/April 2026, threatened to target and destroy Iranian energy facilities and critical infrastructure, including power plants, desalination plants, and bridges. The letter asserted these American threats, especially amid what Tehran calls "acts of aggression and grave violations of international humanitarian law" attributed to the US and Israel since February 28, 2026, demand urgent UN action. It stressed that explicitly threatening a UN member state, particularly from the General Assembly, severely weakens the UN Charter's authority and the organization's core duty to prevent threats to global peace and security.
