Giant Tanker Shortage Drives Global Oil Shipping Costs Up

Sharply rising oil shipping costs have rendered some long-distance transport operations economically unfeasible due to a significant shortage of available giant tankers. This scarcity of charterable vessels in certain regions has prompted refineries to alter their strategies, opting to purchase oil from geographically closer sources to avoid exorbitant transportation burdens. Illustrating the crisis's impact, the cost to ship a single barrel of oil from Houston to Asia surged by $26, equivalent to $52 million per shipment. This now represents approximately a quarter of the current price of West Texas Intermediate crude. Notably, shipping costs constituted a very minor fraction of the total shipment expense before the escalation of tensions related to Iran.
