France Prepares for New Protests and General Strike Next Month
Trade unions and protest groups in France have called for demonstrations next Saturday and a general strike on November 5, continuing pressure on the government over low wages, rising living costs, and declining public services. Approximately 410,000 people participated in last Saturday's protests, accompanied by a heavy police presence of 70,000 officers, which helped limit violence and vandalism. Authorities arrested 1,314 individuals and around 50 police officers were injured. Union leaders stated that public anger extends beyond students to include workers, firefighters, and other groups. The Yellow Vests movement has also called for new marches and sit-ins. The French government faces increasing pressure to address the crisis amid demands for more effective measures to improve living conditions, while financial difficulties and political divisions constrain its ability to act.
