Former MP Talal Al-Zobaie Sentenced to Seven Years, Ordered to Repay Large Sum

An Iraqi court has sentenced former MP Talal Al-Zobaie to seven years in prison after convicting him of illicit gain and wealth inflation. The Integrity Commission reported on Sunday that this verdict followed its findings of a substantial increase in Al-Zobaie's wealth, acquired through illegal means. The commission noted that the value of the illicit gains and the inflated assets of the convicted individual totaled approximately 35 billion Iraqi dinars. The court's judgment also mandated Al-Zobaie to pay a total sum of nearly 70 billion dinars, covering the restitution of the illicit gains and an equivalent financial penalty.
