Former Chelsea Coach Thwarted Ronaldo Deal

Thomas Tuchel, former Chelsea coach, thwarted a potential deal to bring Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo to the London club, despite determined efforts by former owner Todd Boehly. Information revealed that Todd Boehly, Chelsea's former owner, showed significant interest in signing Cristiano Ronaldo during his second spell with Manchester United, prior to his transfer to Al Nassr Saudi. Boehly met with football agent Jorge Mendes in Portugal at that time. However, Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea's manager then, strongly opposed any deal to sign the Portuguese forward, while Ronaldo was experiencing a period of dissatisfaction at United. Tensions with Tuchel escalated after Boehly failed to sign players such as Matthijs de Ligt, Raphinha, Frenkie de Jong, and Presnel Kimpembe. In contrast, there was greater agreement regarding the signing of Raheem Sterling, for whom Boehly personally led negotiations to bring him from Manchester City for £47.5 million. Last February, Boehly admitted that his transfer strategy was "not scientific enough." He stated: "I found myself stuck in the interim sporting director position during the summer, without knowing what makes a good footballer. But I knew that if Marc Cucurella was wanted by Manchester City, I wanted him. It was that simple." Todd Boehly stepped down from his interim sporting director role at the Blues in January 2023.
