Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa stated that postponing the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia to 2028 remains a viable option if conditions necessitate, amid ongoing security developments across the region. Speaking to reporters in Zurich, Switzerland, Al Khalifa explained that the confederation is in no hurry to decide the tournament's fate, noting that officials can wait until late November to evaluate unfolding events. He pointed out that regional circumstances are unpredictable and could shift rapidly for better or worse, emphasizing that the AFC continues to track updates closely while maintaining the championship on its scheduled timeline for now. The continental competition is slated to take place across Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al-Khobar featuring 24 national teams, running from January 7 to February 5, 2027. These remarks follow mounting regional security tensions that have impacted sporting fixtures in Saudi Arabia. An AFC Champions League match involving Al-Nassr was delayed by an hour after a missile aimed at Riyadh was intercepted, while three domestic league fixtures were postponed, including the showdown between Al-Ahli and Al-Nassr. Concurrently, Australia, one of the qualified participants, affirmed it is closely observing the situation inside Saudi Arabia, whereas South Korea's professional football players' association raised serious concerns regarding player safety during the tournament.
